Upright Vacuum Cleaners

Upright vacuum cleaners are designed to be easy to use, and have the controls within easy reach of the hand or the foot. They glide effortlessly around the floor, and one of the newest upright vacuum cleaners uses a ball instead of wheels, to make it even more versatile and able to clean more effectively.

It used to be thought that the more powerful the upright vacuum cleaner motor, the better it would clean. This is not true, as the effectiveness of the motor is more important than the power it generates. Currently there are a number of lower powered upright vacuum cleaners that are just as effective, if not more effective, at picking up dust and dirt compared to those with more powerful motors. The shape of the nozzle also helps to determine how good a vacuum cleaner is at picking up dust and dirt.

Over the last few years, cyclone technology has been at the forefront of upright vacuum cleaner designs. This technology means that the air flow goes through cylinders and uses centrifugal force to separate dust from the air. The dust is then collected at the bottom of the cylinder. In traditional upright vacuum cleaners, the air goes through a bag which collects the dust. This bag then needs to be emptied or replaced when full, as it reduces suction power, and so the effectiveness of the upright vacuum cleaners.

One of the benefits of bagless upright vacuum cleaners is that it is easy to see when the cylinder needs to be emptied, as the cylinder is transparent. It's not always easy to know when a bag needs replacing.

The filters are also important on an upright vacuum cleaner. If you suffer from asthma, or have allergies, pets, or long hair, then you may want to consider an upright vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air, and by definition, removes at least 99.97% of airborne particles. Unlike most filters, which work like a sieve, HEPA filters trap the particles instead.

If you want a new upright vacuum cleaner, then you'll want to make sure that it is not too heavy to manoeuvre. If you have to vacuum stairs, or perhaps have health problems, you won't want a big heavy upright vacuum cleaner. In addition you'll need to factor in maintenance costs for filters, and perhaps bags, as well as other consumables that may wear out over time. You will also need to check that the model of upright vacuum cleaner you are considering is easy to store. You don't want to discover that you can't find anywhere to store your new upright vacuum cleaner when you get it home.
